The suspect in the killing of activist Charlie Kirk, an ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, was arrested on Friday, September 12, in the United States. The arrest was confirmed by Utah Governor Spencer Cox after more than a day of searching for the suspect.
According to the governor, family members said that 22-year-old Tyler Robinson had previously remarked that Charlie Kirk was “full of hate and spreading hatred.” Robinson’s father recognized his son in photos released by authorities and contacted a religious leader who helped mediate the surrender.
“I want to thank his family for doing the right thing and turning him in,” Governor Spencer Cox said. The FBI confirmed the arrest to The New York Times and reported that Robinson was detained last night about 400 kilometers from the crime scene, in St. George, near Zion National Park.
The suspect is undergoing questioning this morning. His identity has not yet been officially released as authorities continue collecting evidence and executing search warrants. President Donald Trump said he “expects the death penalty” to be applied, noting that Utah has capital punishment and a governor supportive of the case.
The FBI had released photos and a video of the suspect before the arrest, attempting to identify him and only releasing the images publicly if necessary. A high-powered rifle, along with palm prints and footprints, helped identify Robinson.
The suspect arrived at Utah Valley University shortly before noon, climbed onto a roof, and shot Kirk, who was struck in the neck during an on-campus event in Orem. Kirk, 31, was taken for medical treatment but died during surgery. Two other suspects were detained and released after questioning, deemed “persons of interest.”
Charlie Kirk founded and presided over Turning Point USA, an organization promoting conservative values in U.S. universities and high schools. The political influencer had over 14 million combined followers on social media and hosted The Charlie Kirk Show, broadcast on about 150 radio stations and available as a podcast.
